Cobe Williams (24) and Stef Smith (22) paired up for 46 points in leading Chemnitz past Giessen for their first victory in the Netto BBL Pokal since 2023.

NINERS Chemnitz rallied from 14 points down to avoid an upset and beat GIESSEN 46ers 77-70 on the road to reach the Round of 16 of the Netto BBL Pokal. Cobe Williams (24 points) and Stef Smith (22 points) combined for 46 points to lead the way for the winners, who will next face Basketball Löwen Braunschweig.

Turning Point: Chemnitz used a 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 65-58 lead. Giessen drained four triples to make it a one-point game with 3:13 minutes to play. But the guests did not allow Giessen to score the rest of the game to escape with the win. 

Duel in focus: Zachery Cooks came off the Giessen bench and was limited to just 4 points as he made just 2 of 10 shots - including missing all 6 three-pointers though he did have 2 assists and 3 steals. Cobe Wiliiams at the other end was one of the main weapons for Chemnitz with 24 points. 

Numbers Please: Chemnitz held Giessen to just 22 points in the second half while allowing the hosts to shoot just 39 percent from the field, including 42 percent on two-pointers. 

Player of the Game: While Cobe Williams led Chemnitz in scoring with 24 points, Stef Smith poured in 22 points while also picking up 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. 

The Germans: Mateo Seric helped Chemnitz to the win with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals while Elias Rödl - son of Henrik Rödl - had 4 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal. At the other end, Robin Benzing collected 5 points and 5 rebounds and Till Gloger picked up 4 points and 3 rebounds.

Also Newsworthy: Chemitz defeated the ProA side to advance from the opening round of the cup for the first time since 2023 - when they beat knocked off Giessen. 

What's Up Next: Chemnitz will next face Basketball Löwen Braunschweig in the Netto BBL Cup in the Round of 16 which is scheduled for October 17-18. Chemnitz will be playing in the first game of the easyCredit BBL season as they take on defending champs ALBA BERLIN in the German capital on Friday September 18. Giessen meanwhile will start their ProA season on Friday September 25 at home against Artland Dragons.
