Segu buzzer-beater ends Ulm’s perfect start to the season, sends Bamberg into Cup Quarter-Finals

Ronaldo Segu buried a three-pointer at the buzzer as Bamberg Baskets handed ratiopharm ulm their first loss of the season with a 103-100 victory to reach the German BBL Cup Quarter-Finals. Bamerg trailed by 15 points in the first half but Segu poured in 22 points in front of a Freak City crowd dreaming of a seventh cup crowd and Kyle Lofton led Bamberg with 25 points. Ulm, the 1996 cup winners, had won all three of their games in both the easyCredit BBL and the BKT EuroCup, but Alfonso Plummer’s 23 points were not enough.

Game Summary: Ulm had the better start to the game, jumping ahead 16-8 thanks to their long range shooting. The hosts were able to hit a couple of three-pointers and got within 21-19. Ulm finished the first quarter with a 10-2 run with two triples from Alfonso Plummer to lead 31-21 after 10 minutes. Ulm tallied the first five points of the second quarter and the advantage grew to 15 points - 36-21. It was still 42-27 when Ulm went scoreless for nearly 2 minutes and the home side started a 17-4 surge to make it 46-44 for Ulm. The guests were up 51-46 at halftime.
Nelson Weidemann drained a triple to start the second half for Ulm. But Bamberg continued the momentum from the first half and the tandem of Kevin Wohlrath and Ibrahim Watson helped Freak City pull ahead a 63-62. Ulm reclaimed the lead but Bamberg scored five points in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter to lead 71-69. Bamberg were not ready to give up the game and continued to fight with KeyShawn Feazell’s inside play helping build an 83-74 cushion with 6 minutes to play. Ulm answered with the next five points only to see Bamberg still lead 89-82. Ulm continued their hot long range shooting with four three-pointers to make it 96-96 with under 58 seconds to play. After a Kyle Lofton jumper, Feazell blocked Plummer’s layup attempt and Lofton twice split two free throws and Bamberg led 100-98 with 5.9 seconds to play. Marcio Santos’ layup with 2.4 seconds knotted the game. Setting up Segu’s heroics, collecting the pass from Watson and draining the buzzer-beater.

Numbers Please: Bamberg shot 65 percent on two-pointers as well as 56 percent from long range while making 20 of 30 free throws compared to 8 of 14 from the line for Ulm.

Player of the Game: While Kyle Lofton scored a game-high 25 points, Ronaldo Segu hit for 22 points including the game-winner. He also had 2 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Germans: Kevin Wohlrath buried 3 three-pointers in scoring 13 points for Bamberg, Moritz Krimmer scored 10 points with 4 rebounds and Filip Stanic added 8 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Philipp Herkenhoff collected 4 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal in the loss and Nicolas Bretzel picked up 4 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Also Newsworthy Part 1: Alfonso Plummer was outstanding for Ulm with 23 points on 7 of 9 shooting from three-point range while NBA prospect Ben Saraf tallied 20 points and 4 assists.

Also Newsworthy Part 2: Bamberg are still alive for their seventh German Cup to go with those from 1992, 2010-2012, 2017 and 2019. Bamberg have dominated this matchup historically with 73 wins in the 97 matchups, including four of the last six in the German Cup - in the 2012 Semi-Finals and the Quarter-Finals in 2015 and 2021. The Quarter-Finals will take place on December 7 and 8 with the draw taking place after the final Round of 16 game between Telekom Baskets Bonn and FC Bayern Munich. The Top Four will take place on February 15-16.

What's Up Next: Bamberg’s next game will be at Bristol Flyers on Wednesday October 16 in the European North Basketball League before hosting ROSTOCK SEAWOLVES on Sunday October 20. This was the second of a monster six-game road trip for Ulm, who will play on Monday October 14 at Besiktas Fibabanka Istanbul before heading to the west coast of the United States to play the Portland Trail Blazers in an NBA exhibition and then playing at EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Saturday, October 19.
